History

In the mid 1800's the area now known as Lincoln Park was considered remote. As such a small pox hospital and cemetery were built in the area to address the problem of small pox during this period. At this time land in the area went for an amazing $150/acre!

Similar to New York, Chicago was witness to an influx of immigrants during the mid 1800's. Germans were among the first to the area participating in the established agriculture trade. Others brought their steep tradition in brewing beer to the area. Around 1865 city leaders, taking inspiration from New York's Central Park, blocked out a 120 acre block of swamp land along the lake. The area was dredged and dubbed "Lake Park" only to be renamed to Lincoln Park after President Lincoln's assassination.

As the aforementioned immigrants took roots and established businesses, many of them became affluent leaders in the area and built extravagant homes, some still standing today. As growth continued in the area, so did property values. Feeding the real estate boom around the turn of the century was the expanding retail. Restaurants and shops began to spring up around what is now Clark street.

Recently Lincoln Park has seen an influx of young professionals seeking to rehab some of the older homes. Along with this has come a demand for increased parks and other attractions. Property values have increased steadily as a result and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
