Logan Square is bounded by Armitage Avenue to the south, Western Ave to the east, Diversey Parkway to the north, and Kimball Avenue to the west (2000N to 2800N and 2400W to 3400W).History
Logan Square began with much more humble beginnings than what we know of the area to day. In the mid 1800's. the industrialization of Chicago resulted in significant uptake of the land. Unfortunately much of the city parks were taken over by these industrialization efforts resulting in an appearance that was less than appealing. In an effort to rejuvenate the city landscape in 1870, 28 miles of parks and boulevards were designated around the city. Of these boulevards was what is known today as Logan Square. During this time the Logan Square was known as Jefferson Township. Like many other areas of Chicago, Logan Square was home to many immigrants looking to make a living. Instead of building Grand Victorian homes indicative of the times, the immigrants instead drew upon influence from back home to the great castles they knew.Logan Square is named after John Alexander Logan, a Union General in the Civil War that later went on to practice law in Illinois, ultimately being elected to congress in 1858. To commemorate the 1918 centennial of Illinois, an architect by the name of Henry Bacon was commissioned to design a monument to be placed in Logan Square. If you see similarities in the monument to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., you are not imagining things as they were designed by the the same architect.
